Tafeltennistafel zelf maken

  • 750ML primer of grondverf. Prijs: 18E
  • 1 Liter schoolbordverf. Prijs: 44E
  • Bouwhout of timmerhout: 6 poten van 76cm. Prijs: 33,30E.

How to make your own ping pong table

Ping pong tables can be expensive so I thought it would be fun to build my own creation. We have a big garage, so I don’t need any of the fancy folding tables that you can buy on the market today. Besides that, I enjoy working on such a project – even though I am fully aware that buying a table tennis table is almost cost-equivalent.

A frame with wooden legs

This has to be pretty strong as the table top is heavy and the MDF texture isn’t the most durable or strongest one, so it definitely needs the support of a solid framework. I built mine with six legs, as I still had some strong wooden beams laying around, from a previous project. Below you can see the frame. Perhaps I would have used 8 legs instead of 6, if my beams would have been thinner. I also considered making two separate, since the table top also is split in two parts. Either way, I decided for one big frame.

I thought about making a frame like the one below, but I figured those triangular structures are difficult to build, so I opted for the frame showing above instead.

Table top:

After building the frame, it was time to construct the table top. As there were no pieces of wood big enough to cover the entire surface, I decided to split the table in two halves. Many of the commercial tables can be folded for easy storage, which means they also feature a split surface. On top of that, it will not matter that much as the split is right below the net anyway – a place where a ping pong ball will rarely bounce.

What type of wood to use?

Good wood is expensive. Since one of the reasons for starting this project was to save money, I opted to choose for the aforementioned plates of MDF. You can buy plates at any home improvement shop (I bought mine at the local Home Depot). Make sure to get the right MDF and not plywood. Plywood is much harder to work with, since it easily falls apart when trying to saw it or drill holes in it. Just to be clear, take a look at the picture below. The top plate is MDF, which is what you should get for your ping pong table.

How to treat the wood?

First cover the entire surface with primer, so that the chalkboard paint will not get absorbed by the texture of the MDF. Let the primer dry and redo the entire process. Then take white paint and draw the lines; you don’t have to very precise with this as the borders will only be defined later on – when applying the chalkboard paint. Let the white paint dry and cover it with plastic tape, and then continue by painting the entire surface with the chalkboard paint. The tape should protect the white lines from being painted dark. The carefully remove the plastic tape and there you go: your table tennis top is ready!

Repeat the entire process for the second half of the table top. It obviously makes more sense to do them together, but the process should be clear.

Then I ordered one of these nets from Amazon to finish off the project.

Conclusion:

It was a lot more work than I had anticipated, but it was fun to do. The table doesn’t play in the same way as a table you buy in the store; the ball bounces a little bit differently, but that’s OK. The chalkboard paint did a great job, although it’s just hard to get the same quality as the machine-fabricated counterpart. Either way – even if my children won’t be using it for ping pong – at least they have we a nice blackboard to scribble on 😉
